How to use the NPS calculator
- 01
Choose how to enter your answers
Use group totals if your survey tool already splits the answers, or paste the raw 0-10 scores from a spreadsheet column or export.
- 02
Read your score
You get your NPS from -100 to 100, the share of promoters, passives and detractors, and the number of answers it is based on.
- 03
Check the margin of error
With few answers the score can swing a lot. The margin of error shows how far the true score could be from yours, at 95% confidence.
How NPS is calculated
People answer "How likely are you to recommend us to a friend or colleague?" on a scale from 0 to 10. Each answer falls into one of three groups:
- Promoters: 9 or 10
- Passives: 7 or 8
- Detractors: 0 to 6
NPS is the percentage of promoters minus the percentage of detractors. Passives count towards the total but not the score. With 45 promoters, 30 passives and 25 detractors out of 100 answers, the NPS is 45 - 25 = 20.
What is a good NPS?
Any score above 0 means you have more promoters than detractors. Beyond that, scores vary a lot by industry, by how you ask and by who you ask, so the most useful comparison is with your own earlier scores, asked the same way.
The number tells you where you stand, not why. Follow it with "What is the main reason for your score?" and read what detractors say first.
Common questions
How do you calculate NPS?
Subtract the percentage of detractors (scores 0 to 6) from the percentage of promoters (scores 9 or 10). Passives (7 or 8) are left out of the subtraction but still count in the total. The result runs from -100 to 100.
Can NPS be negative?
Yes. A negative NPS means more of the people who answered are detractors than promoters. The lowest possible score is -100, when everyone is a detractor.
How many responses do I need for a reliable NPS?
It depends on how precise you need the score to be. The margin of error shrinks as answers grow: with 45% promoters and 25% detractors, 100 answers give a margin of about ±16 points and 400 answers about ±8.
Why do passives not count in the score?
Passives are satisfied but not keen enough to recommend you, so NPS leaves them out of the subtraction. They still count in the total, which is why turning a passive into a promoter raises the score.
