Your response rate

1.5% 48 answers from 3,200 page views: about 1 in 67.

Per page view. Every view counts, so a reader who opens the page twice counts twice. The rate is lower than per visitor, and it is the closest match to how often an on-page survey is shown.

How to use the response rate calculator

  1. 01

    Choose what to divide by

Page views for a survey on the page, unique visitors to count each person once, or emails delivered for an email survey.

  2. 02

    Enter your numbers

Take the answers from your survey tool and the base from your analytics or email tool, for the same pages and dates.

  3. 03

    Compare pages

Add several pages to see each one next to the combined rate. A page at twice the combined rate or more, or at half or less, is flagged.

How to calculate a response rate

A response rate is the share of people who saw your survey and answered it:

  • Response rate = answers ÷ people who saw the survey × 100

Say a help page gets 60 answers in a month, from 3,000 page views by 2,000 unique visitors. Per page view, the rate is 2%. Per visitor, it is 3%. Only the base changed.

Why the denominator changes the number

The bottom of the fraction decides who counts as "saw the survey", so say which one you used whenever you share a rate.

  • Page views count every load of the page. A reader who comes back twice counts twice, so the rate is lower than per visitor.
  • Unique visitors count each person once for the period. The rate is higher, and it depends on how your analytics tool spots returning visitors.
  • Emails delivered count invitations that reached an inbox. Sent includes bounces, and opens are inflated by email apps that open messages automatically.

Rates on different bases do not compare. A 3% rate per visitor and a 2% rate per page view can describe the same survey.

Why Asklet doesn't show a response rate

Asklet doesn't count how many times the widget loads, so it can't show a response rate itself. Take each page's answers from Asklet and its page views for the same dates from your analytics, and divide them here.

Analytics tools can miss visitors who block scripts or decline tracking, so treat any website response rate as an estimate.

Common questions

How do you calculate a survey response rate?

Divide the number of answers by the number of people who saw the survey, then multiply by 100. With 60 answers from 3,000 page views, the response rate is 2%.

Should I use page views or unique visitors?

For a survey shown on the page, page views are the closer match, because the survey loads with the page. Use unique visitors when you want the share of people who answered. Keep the same base over time so your rates stay comparable, and say which one you used.

What is a good survey response rate?

It depends on the channel, the audience and how you ask. Compare a page with its own earlier rates and with similar pages on your site, asked the same way. Our guide to survey response rates covers the differences between channels.

Why is one page's response rate much higher than the others?

Something may be sending people there to answer, such as a link from a forum thread, or a step on the page has stopped working and readers want to tell you. Read that page's answers before you trust its score.

Does Asklet show a response rate?

No. It doesn't count widget loads, so it doesn't know how many readers saw the survey. Use the answers per page from Asklet and the page views from your analytics for the same dates.

How many answers do I need?

A response rate tells you how many people answered, not whether that is enough. The sample size calculator works out how many answers you need for a given margin of error.

Do you store what I enter?

No. The calculator runs in your browser and nothing is sent to us.
