How to use the CSAT calculator
- 01
Choose how to enter your answers
Use totals per rating if your survey tool already counts them, or paste the raw 1-5 ratings from a spreadsheet column or export.
- 02
Read your score
You get the share of satisfied answers (4 or 5), the average rating and how the answers spread across the scale.
- 03
Check the margin of error
With few answers the score can move a lot. The margin of error shows how far the true score could be from yours, at 95% confidence.
How CSAT is calculated
People answer a question such as "How satisfied were you with this?" on a scale from 1 (very unsatisfied) to 5 (very satisfied). CSAT is the percentage of answers that are 4 or 5:
- CSAT = (answers of 4 or 5) ÷ (all answers) × 100
With 78 answers of 4 or 5 out of 100, the CSAT is 78%. Answers of 1, 2 and 3 count towards the total but not the score, so a neutral 3 lowers it as much as a 1 does. That is why the calculator also shows the average and the full spread.
What is a good CSAT score?
There is no single benchmark: scores depend on the industry, on what you ask about and on the wording of the question. The most useful comparison is with your own earlier scores, asked the same way at the same moment.
A score tells you how many people are satisfied, not why. Follow the rating with an optional "What could we do better?" and read what the 1s and 2s say first.
CSAT or NPS?
CSAT asks about one moment: a support reply, a purchase, an article. NPS asks how likely someone is to recommend you, so it measures the relationship as a whole. Use CSAT on a page or after a task, and NPS for your product or service overall.
Common questions
How do you calculate CSAT?
Divide the number of satisfied answers (4 or 5 on a 1-5 scale) by the total number of answers and multiply by 100. With 78 satisfied answers out of 100, the CSAT is 78%.
What is a good CSAT score?
It depends on your industry, on what you ask about and on how you word the question. Compare your score with your own earlier results, asked the same way at the same moment. A score that rises over time tells you more than an outside benchmark.
Is CSAT the same as the average rating?
No. CSAT is the share of answers that are 4 or 5. The average uses every answer, so it changes when people move from 1 to 3 even though the CSAT stays the same. The calculator shows both.
How many answers do I need for a reliable CSAT?
It depends on how precise you need the score to be. At a CSAT of 80%, 100 answers give a margin of error of about ±8 points and 400 answers about ±4. Use the sample size calculator to plan ahead.
Can I use a 1-10 or 1-7 scale?
You can, but this calculator uses the common 1-5 scale. With other scales, CSAT is usually the share of answers in the top two points of the scale.
Is my data stored?
No. The calculator runs in your browser. Nothing you type or paste is sent to us or saved.
