Anonymous feedback
Anonymous feedback tools: questions answered
What anonymous feedback is, how to collect it, how to set up an anonymous form, and which free tools can do it.
What is anonymous feedback?
Anonymous feedback is a rating, answer or comment given without a name or any detail that could identify the person who gave it. Because nobody can trace it back to them, people tend to be more candid, especially about what didn't work.
The trade-off is that you can't reply or ask a follow-up question. Anonymous feedback works best for spotting patterns across many answers, such as which pages confuse readers or which articles help them. To sort out one person's problem, you need a way to reach them.
What is the best free anonymous feedback tool?
The best one is the tool that never collects anything that could identify the person answering - no sign-in, no email, no cookies and no IP address - and still lets you read the results clearly. For feedback on web pages and articles, a cookieless widget does this by design.
Many tools offer an "anonymous mode" that hides names in the results while still storing technical data in the background. Before choosing one, check what it actually stores, not just what it shows you.
Asklet has a Free plan and is anonymous by design: no cookies, no IP addresses and no sign-in for the people answering.
Is there a free online tool for collecting anonymous feedback?
Yes. Several survey and form tools have free plans, and some can be set up to collect anonymous answers. Asklet is free to start and collects website feedback anonymously by default.
- Form builders - good for one-off anonymous forms you share as a link
- Survey platforms - good for longer questionnaires, often with an anonymous setting
- On-page widgets such as Asklet - good for asking visitors about the page they are reading
How do you collect anonymous feedback?
Use a tool that stores nothing that identifies people, ask one or two short questions where they already are, and tell them their answers are anonymous.
- Decide what you want to learn, then write one or two short questions
- Ask where people already are, such as on the page they are reading, so you never need their email address to reach them
- Use a tool that sets no cookies and stores no IP addresses
- Say next to the question that answers are anonymous
- Read the results as a whole and look for patterns, not individuals
On a website, Asklet handles this with one snippet. Readers answer on the page, and you see the results per page with no personal data stored.
How can I create an anonymous feedback form?
Ask only the questions you need, collect no names or emails, and use a tool that does not store IP addresses or set cookies. Then tell people their answers are anonymous - it makes them more honest.
- Leave out name, email and any "optional" contact fields
- Avoid questions so specific they identify someone, such as team plus job title
- Choose a tool that does not log IP addresses or set cookies
- Remove personal details people type into comment boxes
- Only show percentages once enough people have answered
In Asklet you create a survey, paste one snippet on your site, and every answer is anonymous. Emails and phone numbers typed into comments are removed before saving.
How to create a truly anonymous survey?
A survey is truly anonymous only when no one - including you and the tool - can link an answer to a person. That means no identifying questions, no login, no tracking cookies, no stored IP addresses and no results broken down into groups so small that people can be recognised.
"Confidential" is not the same as "anonymous". A confidential survey knows who answered but promises not to share it. An anonymous survey never knows.
Small numbers are a common leak: if only two people answered from a page or team, a percentage can point straight at them. Asklet shows counts always and percentages only once a page has enough responses.
